Sustainability

Watoto’s sustainability initiatives are a critical part of its development strategy. The purpose of our sustainability program is threefold:

  • To generate income that sustains Watoto’s activities, allowing us to provide for the orphaned children and vulnerable women in our care
  • To create a training component for Watoto’s young adults so that they are equipped to become future business leaders
  • To create employment opportunities for Watoto’s young adults and for members of the extended community

Watoto operates various income-generating projects, as listed below.

Watoto currently operates a 200 acre agricultural farm located on the outskirts of Kampala. The farm provides basic grains and vegetables to the Watoto villages and some for sale to the local market. Another plot of land is currently being developed for farming in northern Uganda.
Watoto operates a goat farm to provide milk for Baby Watoto. There are currently 150 goats on the farm, producing an average of 50 litres of milk per week in support of the needs at Baby Watoto.
A poultry farm, located on the outskirts of Kampala, is currently in operation. One of four barns planned has been completed, the facility currently has approximately 8,000 chickens. Egg production began in February 2014. Eggs are being delivered to our village as well as being sold to the local market.
The Watoto fabrications unit creates all of the necessary items to furnish the Watoto village homes, staff houses and classrooms for all the current projects. The production unit is designed to give vocational students the opportunity to put into practice the skills and knowledge acquired in class. They practise carpentry and metalwork. The production unit provides employment for these students and the greater community.
